Why My Best Salespeople Ignored the Metrics

The dashboard said one thing. My top performers did another. What they understood about focus that the numbers couldn’t show.

We had a beautiful dashboard. Dozens of metrics, all green, all tracked.

And yet my best salespeople barely looked at it.

At first this frustrated me. If the data was good, why weren’t they living in it? So I started paying attention to what they did instead.

They weren’t ignoring performance. They were ignoring noise. Out of thirty tracked activities, they had quietly decided which three actually moved a deal — and they poured their energy there. The rest of the dashboard was, to them, a distraction dressed up as diligence.

They understood something the metrics couldn’t show: that focus is a choice about what to ignore. The numbers told them where they’d been. Their Top 3 told them where to go.

Metrics measure the past. Focus builds the future.
